The starting flag dropped on the opening race of the Olympic season for US hopefuls this morning at Mercer Lake, where several dozen crews contested small boat events in the first US National Selection Regatta. Just days after being cleared to compete for the United States if he wins the trials, Xeno Muller posted the fastest heat time of the morning in the men's single, pushed along by Sloan DuRoss, who posted the 2nd fastest time overall in placing 2nd to Xeno. Other heat winners include Kent Smack, Aquil Abdullah, lightweight sculler Steve Tucker, Henry Nuzum, and Jon Burns.
The quickest times in the women's single were posted by Danika Holbrook and Kristen Goodrich, who placed 1-2 in the final women's heat. Frequent boatmates Kelly Salchow and Hilary Gehman also placed 1-2 in their heat, 0.9 seconds apart.
We won't go over all the results here; for full results, see today's results.
The men's and women's pair unfolded essentially as Princeton Training Center scrimmages, while the six heats of women's lightweight singles served primarily to narrow the field slightly going into this evening's semis, with spreads of just under a minute in a couple of the heats. The five heats of the men's lightweight single served a similar purpose, with the front of the pack mixing new names with grizzled vets a- John Cashman took his heat.
The D-E-F finals are underway now, semis run after a 90-minute break to allow the Mercer Junior programs to cover the lake, resuming at 5:40pm.S See the full schedule for Friday afternoon.
